What is DHIS?

DHIS is the Digital Health Incentive Scheme, run by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). The idea is simple: rather than only requiring hospitals to go digital, the NHA pays a financial incentive for the digital activity that ABDM wants — creating and linking records to patients’ ABHA accounts.

So the same work that makes you ABDM-active — issuing an ABHA-linked discharge summary, prescription or report — can also earn an incentive, rather than just being an overhead.

How the incentive works, in shape

The exact rates and caps are set by NHA notification and have been revised over time, so treat the mechanism as the durable part and the numbers as “check the portal”:

• The incentive is paid per qualifying ABDM transaction — broadly, ABHA-linked records created and shared with patient consent.
• It typically kicks in above a monthly threshold of such records, and is capped — so it rewards real, ongoing volume, not a one-off.
• It runs through your facility’s ABDM identity, which is why being on the HFR and having your doctors on the HPR matter — no verified facility and clinicians, no qualifying records.

How do you become eligible?

There’s no shortcut around the basics — the incentive follows the same rails as the rest of ABDM:

• Register the facility on the HFR and your clinicians on the HPR.
• Actually create and link ABHA records in daily work — the front desk creating an ABHA at first visit is where this begins.
• Enrol for the incentive on the NHA/ABDM portal and meet the current scheme conditions.

Why it’s worth doing properly

Two reasons. First, ABDM participation is drifting from optional toward expected, so you’ll likely do the work anyway — the incentive just makes it pay for part of itself. Second, the hospitals that earn it are the ones creating records as part of the normal workflow, not as a separate chore someone remembers at month-end. That only happens if your system issues ABHA-linked records by default.
